Layout of tunnels and escalators should facilitate the movement of the most amounts of passengers in the least amount of time. Mechanised infrastructure such as escalators and lifts form a vital network of mobility, facilitating the smooth progression of a passenger’s journey through a station.
Orientation
Reducing the need for the amount of dwell time at key decision points through the station. An opportunity exists to use devices as simple as colour coding of circulation elements to aid the orientation of passengers as they move through several levels. It is beneficial to offer an early indication of external orientation. This is a simple example of how the existing infrastructure can be made to work harder, for minimal capital input.
Accessibility
Some forms of circulation may interact with the streetscape, fire escapes for example, making planning of placement crucial; it would be no use having an emergency gathering point on a narrow, confined area of public realm.
